
Hypoallergenic pets: the honest truth about ‘allergy-friendly’ breeds
No dog or cat is truly hypoallergenic — the allergen lives in skin, saliva and dander, not just the hair. Some breeds shed less of it into the air, which helps some sufferers and not others. Here is what the label really means.
There is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog or cat. The thing people react to is a protein in the animal's dander and saliva, not the hair itself, so even a hairless breed still produces it. What some breeds offer is less of that allergen loose in your home — a real difference for some people, and no difference at all for others.
Where the allergen actually comes from
The trigger is a protein — Fel d 1 in cats, a set of proteins in dogs — carried in saliva and in the dander that flakes from the skin. Hair only matters as a vehicle that spreads it around. That is why a hairless cat is not automatically safe for an allergy sufferer: the skin and saliva still make the protein, hair or no hair.
Two facts about that protein explain most of the confusion. It is small and sticky, so it stays airborne for hours and clings to walls, sofas and clothing rather than settling and staying put — which is why sufferers react in homes where the animal is in another room, and why the allergen is measurable in houses and schools that have never had a cat in them, carried in on other people's clothes. And output varies between individual animals of the same breed far more than between breeds, which is the single most important thing to know before choosing on a label.
Why some breeds still help
Breeds that shed little, or that produce less dander, put less allergen into the air and onto your furniture, which can bring a sensitive person under their threshold. Curly and single-coated breeds are the usual candidates. The effect is real but unpredictable — one sufferer breathes easily around a breed that sets another one sneezing.
The mechanism is worth being precise about, because it is not that these breeds make less allergen. A coat that holds its hair instead of dropping it also holds the dander stuck to that hair, so less of both circulates — the allergen is still being produced, it is just staying on the dog until you brush or bathe it. That has a practical consequence people rarely think through: whoever grooms a low-shedding dog gets the concentrated dose, so it should not be the allergic member of the household.
Test yourself before you commit
Because the reaction is so individual, the only reliable test is time with the actual animal — ideally repeated visits — before you bring it home. A breed's reputation is a weak predictor of how your own immune system will respond, and rehoming a pet an allergy cannot tolerate is a hard outcome to avoid any other way.
Do the test properly rather than optimistically. Visit the animal in its own home, where the allergen has built up, not in a neutral park; stay a couple of hours rather than twenty minutes, since reactions are often delayed; go more than once, on different days; and handle the animal, because saliva on your hands and face is the exposure that matters most. Note how you are that evening and the next morning, not only while you are there. If you are on antihistamines, you are testing the medication and not the animal — which may be a reasonable plan for living with a pet, but it is not information about the pet.
What actually reduces exposure at home
If you go ahead, the measures that help are unglamorous and mostly about geography. Keep the bedroom animal-free and keep that door shut, since a third of your day is spent in there with your face on the bedding. Wash hands after handling and before touching your eyes. Vacuum with a sealed high-efficiency filter rather than an ordinary one, which redistributes fine allergen instead of removing it, and wash soft furnishings and bedding hot and often. An air purifier in the room you use most is a genuine help; hard floors and washable covers make more difference than any of it.
Grooming matters, and so does who does it. Regular brushing and periodic bathing remove dander before it circulates, and both are jobs for a non-allergic member of the household or a groomer. The claims to be sceptical about

Certain cat breeds are safe for allergies. Measured Fel d 1 output varies hugely between individual cats and is not reliably lower in the breeds marketed that way. Some genuinely low producers exist; you cannot pick them from a breed name.
A short-haired animal is a low-allergen one. Hair length has nothing to do with it. A short coat that sheds heavily distributes more dander than a long one that holds on to it.
Before you get a pet at all
Get the allergy properly assessed first, because 'I think I am allergic to cats' covers several different situations and only some of them are about cats. Testing tells you what you actually react to, how strongly, and whether asthma is involved — which changes the calculus entirely, since animal exposure that produces a rash is a different proposition from exposure that produces wheezing. Immunotherapy is a real option for some people and takes years, so it is worth knowing about before rather than after.
Then be honest about the alternative you would be choosing between.
