Sphynx

The Sphynx — the Canadian Sphynx — is a cat breed known for its lack of fur, the result of a naturally occurring genetic mutation.

History

Hairlessness in cats occurs on its own, and the Sphynx was developed by selectively breeding such cats from the 1960s onwards. The bare skin often carries the coat's would-be pattern in pigment.

Temperament

The breed is known for being affectionate, energetic and attention-seeking — an extrovert that seeks out warmth and laps, and is sociable with people and other pets.

Care

Hairless does not mean low-maintenance: the skin produces oils a coat would normally absorb, so it needs regular bathing, warmth and sun protection. It is often suggested for allergy-sufferers, though no cat is truly hypoallergenic.

Health
