6. Liability for links

Our articles may link to external sites. We do not control those pages and are not responsible for their content; the operator of each linked page is. If you notice a problem with a link, tell us and we will review it.

7. Data sources and attribution

The counts on this site are measured rather than estimated, which only means anything if you can see what they were measured from. Every dataset behind them is named below with its publisher and its licence. This is where attribution lives: a name page prints the number it counted without listing the registers under it, and the breed pages do the same, because the alternative was thirteen register names repeated on twelve thousand pages.

Registers and shelter records the counts come from

  • NYC Dog Licensing Dataset — published by NYC Open Data. How often a name is registered, and which animals carry it. Licence: Public domain, NYC Open Data terms of use.
  • Seattle Pet Licenses — published by City of Seattle. How often a name is registered, and which animals carry it. Licence: Public domain, City of Seattle open data.
  • Austin Animal Center intakes — published by City of Austin. The sex of animals carrying a name, which is where gender comes from. Licence: Public domain, City of Austin open data.
  • Zurich dog names — published by Stadt Zürich, Statistik. European counts and sexes, balancing the US-heavy registers. Licence: CC0 1.0.
  • Montgomery County MD — published by Montgomery County, Maryland. 38,000 sheltered animals with a name and a sex, across dogs, cats and birds. Licence: Public domain, Montgomery County open data.
  • Basel-Stadt dog names — published by Statistisches Amt Basel-Stadt. 9,101 spellings registered in Basel since 2003, the widest European set here. Licence: CC BY.
  • Dogs of Cambridge — published by City of Cambridge, Massachusetts. Counts and sexes from 31,000 licensed dogs in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Licence: PDDL 1.0.
  • Worcester Dog Licenses — published by City of Worcester, Massachusetts. The latest complete year of dog licence names and sexes from Worcester, Massachusetts. Licence: Freely distributable with City of Worcester attribution in derived metadata.
  • City of Victoria BC dog licences — published by City of Victoria, British Columbia. 2024 dog licence counts by name and sex from Victoria, British Columbia. Licence: Open Data Licence, City of Victoria.
  • City of Adelaide dog registrations — published by City of Adelaide. Australian counts and sexes, from three years of registrations. Licence: CC BY 3.0 AU.
  • City of Burnside dog registrations — published by City of Burnside. 5,117 dog registrations from an Adelaide council, with the sex of each animal. Licence: CC BY 3.0 AU.
  • City of Prospect dog registrations — published by City of Prospect. 823 dog registrations from an Adelaide council, with sex and date of birth. Licence: CC BY 3.0 AU.
  • Dogs of Noosa Shire — published by Noosa Council, Queensland. 9,533 dog registrations from a Queensland council, every one of them sexed. Licence: CC BY 2.5 AU.
  • City of Playford dog register — published by City of Playford. About 16,600 South Australian dog registrations with name and sex. Licence: CC BY 3.0 AU.
  • Golden Plains animal registrations — published by Golden Plains Shire. About 6,400 Victorian dog and cat registrations with name, species and sex. Licence: CC BY 3.0 AU.
  • Surf Coast Shire Animal Registrations — published by Surf Coast Shire. About 6,400 named Victorian dog and cat registrations with species. Licence: CC BY 3.0 AU.

Other sources behind the name pages

These fill fields other than the count, and none of them has ever counted a dog.

  • Wiktionary — published by Wikimedia Foundation. Meanings and etymology, each one checked against the cited page. Licence: CC BY-SA 4.0.

Breed data

  • Wikipedia — published by Wikimedia Foundation. Breed descriptions, history and the prose the site rewrites from. Licence: CC BY-SA 4.0.
  • Wikidata — published by Wikimedia Foundation. Breed identity, origin country and the structured facts behind each page. Licence: CC0 1.0.
  • The Dog API — published by TheDogAPI. Dog breed measurements — weight and height ranges, life expectancy. Licence: Free for non-commercial use under the publisher's terms.
  • TheCatAPI — published by TheCatAPI. Cat breed trait ratings, one to five — an assessment, not a measurement. Licence: Free for non-commercial use under the publisher's terms.
  • American Kennel Club — published by American Kennel Club. Dog breed trait ratings quoted on the pages that carry them. Licence: Quoted as ratings, with the publisher named on every page that uses them.

Trait ratings from TheCatAPI and the American Kennel Club are assessments by their publishers, quoted as such rather than presented as measurements. Where a field had no source, it is empty rather than filled with a guess.
