Perro de Presa Mallorquin

The Perro de Presa Mallorquín — the Ca de Bou — is a Mallorcan molosser bred as a catch dog and, historically, for the bull ring.

History

It developed on Mallorca from Iberian catch dogs crossed with English bulldogs and terriers brought by British traders, and was used to hold cattle and in bull-baiting until that was banned. The breed nearly vanished afterwards and was reconstructed in the twentieth century.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, confident and loyal to its household, with a guarding instinct that is deliberate rather than excitable. It is powerful and requires an owner who understands that.

Care and training

It needs moderate exercise, early and continued socialising and consistent handling; it is restricted in some countries. The short coat is easy, and the heavy head means heat deserves care.

Health
