Norwegian Forest Cat

The Norwegian Forest Cat — the skogkatt — is a large, semi-longhaired natural breed from Norway, built by a cold climate rather than by design.

History

It developed as a landrace in the forests and farms of Norway over centuries, its thick water-shedding coat and sturdy frame the work of hard northern winters. It appears in Norse folklore and was later recognised as a formal breed in the twentieth century.

Temperament

The breed is known for being friendly, calm and adaptable — sociable with its family without being demanding, and confident enough to enjoy climbing and exploring. It is a steady, good-natured cat.

Care

The long double coat needs regular brushing, more so in spring when it sheds its dense winter layer. A big, active cat, it appreciates height and space to climb.

Health

Known tendencies include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, hip dysplasia and an inherited glycogen-storage condition, for which breeders test. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one cat; the measured facts and trait ratings are in the panels.
