Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier is a British toy breed with a long, silky steel-blue and tan coat — a small dog with an outsized, confident character.

History

It was developed in the mills and mines of nineteenth-century Yorkshire, where working people bred small terriers to kill rats in the workshops. From those rough beginnings it was refined into the glossy-coated companion and show dog kept today.

Temperament

The breed is known for being lively, bold and affectionate, still very much a terrier under the fine coat. It bonds closely and can be vocal and territorial without early guidance.

Care and training

Exercise needs are modest, met with short walks and play, but the long coat is a real commitment — daily brushing, or a shorter clip to keep it manageable. It trains well with patient, consistent, reward-based work.

Health

Known tendencies include dental crowding, a windpipe that can collapse in tiny dogs, and patellar luxation. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one; the measured facts are in the panel.
