Norwich Terrier

The Norwich Terrier is one of the smallest working terriers — a hardy, prick-eared English ratter with an outsized, cheerful character.

History

It was bred in the east of England to bolt foxes and kill vermin, small enough to go to ground yet game enough for the work. It shares its early history with the drop-eared Norfolk Terrier, the two recognised as separate breeds by the set of their ears.

Temperament

The breed is known for being bold, affectionate and sociable — one of the more companionable terriers, keen and lively but less scrappy than many. It bonds warmly and enjoys being in the thick of things.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and mental work, secure fencing against a strong prey drive, and consistent, reward-based training. The wiry coat needs regular hand-stripping to keep its texture.

Health
