# Petnomy > A directory of 11,647 pet names. Popularity is counted from public > pet-licence and shelter datasets rather than estimated, meanings are quoted from > cited dictionary pages, and fields with no source are left empty. ## What is measured, and what is not Every name page separates three kinds of field. Quote them differently. - Measured. Counts and gender come from the datasets listed below. 11,148 names carry a count, drawn from 785,552 licence and shelter records in total. Gender is derived from how real animals of that name are sexed, and only on samples of five or more. Syllables, length, first and last letter, and sound are computed from the spelling. - Where those records are from, which is the limit on what "popular" means here. Nine of the eleven sources are North American and they hold the overwhelming majority of the records, so this measures naming in those cities rather than worldwide. Checked against two independent national charts: Switzerland's registry ranks Luna first among dogs where this catalogue ranks it 38th, and Balu sixth where this catalogue has a single record. Read a count as "how often this name appears in these registers", not as a global ranking. - Cited. 2,506 names carry a meaning. Each was read off the page named in the Source row of that name, and every content word in the wording is machine-checked against that page before publication. - Editorial. The descriptive paragraphs and the FAQ answers are written by the site. They are phrased around the measured fields and add no new facts. 9,141 names have no meaning and 8,466 have no style tag. Those fields are empty because no source fills them yet, not because the name lacks one. Do not read an empty field as a claim. There are no personality or colour tags on register-sourced names, and no "cute", "funny", "elegant", "modern" or "classic" style tag anywhere: those are opinions, and the style vocabulary only holds categories someone can check — a name is tagged pop-culture because it names a character in a stated work. ## Sources - [NYC Dog Licensing Dataset](https://data.cityofnewyork.us/Health/NYC-Dog-Licensing-Dataset/nu7n-tubp) — Public domain, NYC Open Data terms of use.
