Transylvanian Hound

The Transylvanian Hound is an ancient scent hound of the Carpathian Basin — a hardy Hungarian tracker once used on game from fox to bear.

History

It hunted the forests and mountains of the historical Transylvania for centuries, valued for a keen nose, a good voice and the toughness to work varied and difficult terrain. It came close to extinction in the twentieth century before being carefully revived.

Temperament

The breed is known for being good-natured, courageous and determined, affectionate and even-tempered with its family and dogged once it is on a scent. It is hardy and adaptable.

Care and training

It needs plenty of exercise and a securely fenced space, and training rewards patience with an independent, scent-driven hound. The short coat is easy, and the ears need routine cleaning.
