Rampur Greyhound

The Rampur Greyhound is a tall North Indian sighthound bred to run down jackal, boar and even leopard over open country.

History

It was developed in the princely state of Rampur in the nineteenth century, reportedly by crossing Afghan and Tazi hounds with English Greyhounds to get a dog with more bone and more stamina than either. It declined with the hunting culture that kept it and is now rare.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm and reserved at home and formidable in the field, loyal to its own people and aloof with everyone else. It is a sighthound, with everything that implies about chasing.

Care and training

It needs room to gallop and secure fencing — a sighthound in pursuit does not hear anything. Training works through relationship rather than repetition. The short coat needs little.

Health

Sighthound builds carry the usual sensitivity to anaesthesia and to cold; nothing else is widely documented for this breed. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
