Tibetan Spaniel

The Tibetan Spaniel is a small companion breed from the Himalayas — a bright, alert little dog kept for centuries as a watchful friend in Tibetan monasteries.

History

It was bred not as a true spaniel but as a companion and lookout, keeping watch from the monastery walls and alerting the larger dogs below, and it was long given as a valued gift. Its lion-like look tied it to Buddhist symbolism.

Temperament

The breed is known for being intelligent, independent and affectionate — devoted to its family, aloof with strangers, and fond of a high vantage point from which to survey the room. It is watchful without being yappy.

Care and training

Exercise needs are modest, met with walks and play, and its independent mind rewards patient, positive training. The silky medium coat needs regular brushing.

Health
