Armenian Gampr Dog

The Armenian Gampr is a livestock guardian from the Armenian highlands — an old landrace rather than a constructed breed, and closely related to the other Caucasian mountain dogs.

History

It has guarded flocks on the Armenian plateau for millennia, and Armenian breeders distinguish it from the Soviet-standardised Caucasian Shepherd on the grounds that the Gampr was never bred for show or for a fixed appearance. Its variability is the point rather than a flaw.

Temperament

The breed is known for being independent, even-tempered and protective without being reactive — a guardian that assesses rather than escalates, and one that is notably tolerant with its own household's children and stock.

Care and training

It needs space, secure boundaries and early socialising. It does not take direction the way a herding breed does and was not meant to. The dense coat sheds heavily.
