Estrela Mountain Dog

The Estrela Mountain Dog is one of the oldest breeds of the Iberian Peninsula — a large Portuguese livestock guardian from the Serra da Estrela, the country's highest range.

History

It has guarded flocks in the Portuguese mountains for centuries, defending sheep from wolves and thieves and enduring harsh weather with its dense coat. It is a guardian by presence and courage rather than a herder.

Temperament

The breed is known for being loyal, calm and protective — devoted and gentle with its own people, wary and imposing toward strangers. Its independence and guarding instinct call for early socialising.

Care and training

It needs moderate exercise and room to move, along with early, consistent, reward-based training suited to a strong, independent dog. The thick coat sheds and needs regular brushing.
