Rhodesian Ridgeback

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large southern African hound, named for the ridge of backward-growing hair along its spine — once called the African Lion Hound.

History

It was developed by settlers in southern Africa who crossed European dogs with the ridged hunting dogs of the Khoikhoi, producing a hardy hunter that could track and hold big game — including lion — and guard the homestead. The ridge is the breed's signature.

Temperament

The breed is known for being loyal, dignified and independent, devoted to its family but reserved with strangers and quietly protective. That self-reliance, bred in for the hunt, shows in a strong will.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and enjoys running, and its independent mind calls for early, patient, reward-based training. The short coat is easy to keep.

Health
