Borzoi

The Borzoi is a Russian sighthound — the old "Russian wolfhound" — an elegant, long-coated dog built to course game at speed across open country.

History

It was bred by the Russian aristocracy to hunt wolves and hares over the steppe, working in pairs or packs to run quarry down by sight. The silky coat and deep, narrow frame are the marks of that coursing past.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, gentle and somewhat aloof — quiet and dignified indoors, affectionate with its people but independent by nature, with a powerful instinct to chase anything that runs. It is sensitive and does not take to harsh handling.

Care and training

It needs regular chances to sprint in a safe, enclosed space, because a sighthound in pursuit does not hear a recall. The silky coat needs regular brushing, and training rewards patience and a gentle hand.

Health
