Briquet Griffon Vendéen

The Briquet Griffon Vendéen is the medium member of the rough-coated Vendéen hound family — "briquet" is an old French word for a medium-sized hound.

History

It comes from the Vendée on France's Atlantic coast and was bred down from the Grand Griffon Vendéen to hunt hare and roe deer in country too dense for a taller dog. The breed suffered badly in the Second World War and remains uncommon.

Temperament

The breed is known for being lively, independent and good-humoured, sociable from its pack history and famously stubborn once a scent has its attention.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and secure fencing. The harsh coat needs brushing and occasional stripping. Training works best with patience and food rather than repetition.
