Afghan Hound

The Afghan Hound is an ancient sighthound from the mountains of Afghanistan, unmistakable for its long, flowing silky coat and aloof, aristocratic bearing.

History

It was bred in the mountains and deserts of Afghanistan to hunt by sight over rough country, the heavy coat a protection against cold at altitude. It reached the West in the early twentieth century, where its looks quickly made it a show favourite.

Temperament

The breed is known for being dignified, independent and famously aloof — affectionate on its own terms, catlike in its self-possession and reserved with strangers. It is sensitive and not naturally biddable.

Care and training

The long coat is a major commitment, needing frequent brushing to stay free of mats, and the dog needs regular chances to run in a safe, enclosed space. Training rewards patience over repetition with such an independent mind.

Health
