Barak Hound

The Barak — the Bosnian Coarse-haired Hound — is a rough-coated Balkan scent hound bred to work boar and hare in mountain forest.

History

It comes from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider Illyrian region, where its harsh coat protected it in thorny mountain cover. It was standardised in the twentieth century under the name Illyrian Hound before reverting to a regional one.

Temperament

The breed is known for being lively, determined and attached to its handler, sociable with other dogs and vocal on a trail.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise across rough ground and secure containment. The harsh coat needs brushing and occasional stripping.

Health

Generally hardy; ear infections are the usual complaint in drop-eared hounds. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
