Pudelpointer

The Pudelpointer is a German gun dog assembled from exactly two breeds, with the cross documented from the start.

History

Baron von Zedlitz began it in 1881, crossing the German hunting Poodle — a water dog, not a show poodle — with the English Pointer, to combine the Poodle's water work and trainability with the Pointer's nose and style. Around eighty Poodles and a hundred Pointers went into the foundation, and the breed has been bred to hunting tests rather than appearance ever since.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, cooperative and closely bonded to its handler, steady at home and methodical in the field.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and genuine hunting work. The harsh wire coat needs brushing and occasional stripping and copes well with cold water. It trains willingly.

Health

Generally sound thanks to strict performance selection, with hip dysplasia and ear infections among the known tendencies. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
