Turkish Van

The Turkish Van is a large, semi-longhaired cat from the Lake Van region of Turkey, famous for its chalk-white coat marked only on the head and tail — and for an unusual fondness for water.

History

It is a natural breed from eastern Turkey, where the distinctive "van" pattern — colour restricted to the head and tail on an otherwise white body — occurs on its own. Its water-resistant single coat and reputation as a "swimming cat" set it apart.

Temperament

The breed is known for being energetic, strong and playful — an active, athletic cat that bonds firmly with its people, though it is not always a lap-sitter. It stays lively and enjoys climbing and games.
