Slovak Cuvac

The Slovak Cuvac is a white livestock guardian from the Slovak mountains — the white coat was deliberate, so a shepherd could tell dog from wolf at night.

History

It guarded flocks and homesteads in the Carpathians, where it is related to the other white mountain guardians of central Europe. The breed declined sharply in the twentieth century and was reconstructed from the 1950s by a Slovak veterinary professor working from surviving mountain dogs.

Temperament

The breed is known for being brave, vigilant and devoted to its household, with the flock guardian's habit of deciding for itself. It is affectionate at home and firmly unwelcoming at the boundary.

Care and training

It needs space, secure fencing and early, sustained socialising. Exercise needs are moderate but constant; boredom becomes barking. The thick white double coat sheds heavily and needs regular brushing.

Health
