Shih Tzu

The Shih Tzu is a toy companion breed with Tibetan roots, long associated with the Chinese imperial court — a small, sturdy lapdog under a flowing coat.

History

It is thought to descend from Tibetan dogs such as the Lhasa Apso, developed as a palace companion in China, where its name — "lion" — nods to the look the grooming was meant to suggest. It was a companion from the start rather than a working dog.

Temperament

The breed is known for being affectionate, outgoing and steady, happy in a lap and generally good with children and other pets. It is a companion first and asks mainly for company in return.

Care and training

Exercise needs are modest, met with short walks and play, but the long double coat is the real commitment — daily brushing, or a shorter "puppy clip" to keep it manageable. Housetraining a small dog can take patience and consistency.

Health
