Leonberger

The Leonberger is a giant German breed with a lion-like mane — a large, gentle working dog built for water rescue and draft work.

History

It was created in the town of Leonberg in the nineteenth century from crosses said to include the Newfoundland, St. Bernard and a Pyrenean mountain dog, aiming for a majestic, lion-like companion. The result kept the working ability of its ancestors in the water and in harness.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, friendly and gentle — a good-natured family giant that is patient with children and fond of water. Its steadiness belies its size, though that size still calls for early training.

Care and training

It needs moderate exercise and room to move, with care not to over-work a growing giant, and it enjoys swimming. The heavy double coat sheds a great deal and needs frequent brushing.

Health

Known tendencies include hip and elbow dysplasia, bone cancer, bloat and an inherited nerve disorder carried in some lines; like the giants it lives a short life on average. These are patterns for the breed rather than a verdict on one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
