Himalayan Sheepdog

The Himalayan Sheepdog is a mountain flock guardian of the Indian Himalaya — a heavy-coated working dog kept by shepherds across the northern hill states.

History

It has guarded sheep and goats in the Himalayan foothills for centuries and is related to the wider family of Central Asian and Tibetan mountain dogs. It is a working landrace rather than a standardised breed, and its numbers follow those of the herding communities that keep it.

Temperament

The breed is known for being watchful, independent and protective, bonded to its flock and household and reserved with outsiders.

Care and training

It needs space, secure boundaries and early socialising. Exercise needs are steady rather than intense — this is an endurance animal. The thick coat sheds heavily and suits cold far better than heat.

Health

Generally hardy; nothing is widely documented as specific to the landrace. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
