Dalmatian

The Dalmatian is instantly known by its white coat and dark spots — an athletic dog traced to Croatia and the historical region of Dalmatia.

History

Bred as a hunting dog, it found its lasting role as a carriage dog, trotting for miles alongside horse-drawn coaches to guard them, and later riding with horse-drawn fire engines — the origin of the firehouse mascot and of its reputation for stamina.

Temperament

The breed is known for being energetic, outgoing and loyal, an intelligent dog with a strong will and a need to move. It bonds closely with its family and does not suit a sedentary home.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise — this is a dog built to run beside a carriage all day — along with early training and socialising. The short coat sheds constantly despite its length, and needs regular brushing.

Health

Two known tendencies are specific to the breed: congenital deafness tied to its spotting, and an unusual uric-acid metabolism that makes urinary stones a risk, managed with diet and plenty of water.
