Redbone Coonhound

The Redbone Coonhound is an American scent hound — a striking solid-red dog bred to trail and tree raccoon and larger game.

History

It was developed in the United States from foxhound and other hound stock into a fast, sure-nosed tree dog, equally at home trailing over rough country and swimming after game. The even red coat is the breed's hallmark.

Temperament

The breed is known for being even-tempered, affectionate and eager to please at home, and single-minded and determined once a scent is found. It is sociable and good with families, with the deep bay of a working hound.

Care and training

It needs plenty of exercise and a securely fenced space, since a nose on a trail stops listening, and training a scent hound rewards patience and food. The short coat is easy to keep.
