Chilean Fox Terrier

The Chilean Fox Terrier — the Ratonero Chileno — is Chile's only native breed, descended from fox terriers brought by British settlers.

History

It developed in central Chile from smooth fox terriers crossed with local dogs, kept on farms and in towns to kill rats. It was recognised as a Chilean breed in the twentieth century and is common in the country while almost unknown outside it.

Temperament

The breed is known for being lively, bold and affectionate with its people, with the terrier's alertness and its readiness to challenge much larger dogs.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and a secure garden. The short coat needs almost nothing. Training benefits from consistency and from short, interesting sessions.

Health
