Tonya Finosu

The Tonya Finosu is a small white Turkish spitz from the Black Sea coast, named for the town of Tonya in Trabzon province and known locally as the Kobi.

History

Local accounts trace it to dogs brought into Black Sea ports by northern traders and kept afterwards by households in and around Tonya as yard guards. It has never been recognised by a major kennel club; Turkish academic and municipal efforts have recently gone into describing it, registering it as a distinct breed and securing it as a geographical indication for the district, because it is at real risk of disappearing.

Temperament

The breed is known for guarding out of all proportion to its size — suspicious of strangers, vocal about arrivals — while being playful and affectionate with its own household.

Care and training

Exercise needs are modest but the watchfulness needs managing, or the barking becomes the whole dog. The thick double coat suits the cold, wet Black Sea climate and needs regular brushing.

Health
