Tibetan Kyi Apso

The Tibetan Kyi Apso is a bearded livestock guardian from the Tibetan plateau — a shaggier relative of the Tibetan Mastiff kept by nomadic herders.

History

It guarded flocks and encampments on the high plateau, where its heavy bearded coat suited extreme altitude and cold. It is far less known than the Tibetan Mastiff and its population outside Tibet is very small.

Temperament

The breed is known for being independent, watchful and devoted to its own household, with the flock guardian's habit of acting on its own assessment.

Care and training

It needs space, secure boundaries and early socialising. Exercise needs are steady rather than athletic. The long coat needs regular brushing and handles cold far better than heat.

Health
