Skye Terrier

The Skye Terrier is a long, low Scottish earthdog under a flowing coat — a dignified, devoted terrier from the Isle of Skye.

History

It was bred in the Scottish Highlands and islands to bolt fox, badger and otter from rock and burrow, its long body and hard coat suited to that dangerous work. It became a fashionable companion in the Victorian era and is now one of the rarer terriers.

Temperament

The breed is known for being loyal, dignified and reserved — devoted to its own people, often to one person, and cautious with strangers. It is brave and strong-willed for its size.

Care and training

It needs moderate exercise and early socialising, and its independent streak rewards patient, consistent training. The long double coat needs regular brushing to stay free of mats.
