Perdigueiro Galego

The Perdigueiro Galego is a Galician pointing dog, recovered from near-extinction by regional breeders in north-west Spain.

History

It hunted partridge and hare across Galicia and was largely displaced in the twentieth century by imported pointing breeds. A recovery programme rebuilt the population from remaining rural dogs, and the breed is recognised regionally rather than internationally.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, willing and closely attached to its handler, working methodically rather than at speed.

Care and training

It needs plenty of exercise and work for its nose, and trains readily. The short coat needs little; the drop ears want checking.

Health
