Japanese Bobtail

The Japanese Bobtail is an ancient breed known for its short, pom-pom tail — the cat behind the "beckoning" maneki-neko figures seen across Japan.

History

It has lived in Japan for many centuries, celebrated in art and folklore and long considered a bringer of good luck. Each cat's short, kinked tail is unique, the result of a natural mutation particular to the breed.

Temperament

The breed is known for being active, intelligent and sociable — a playful, talkative cat with soft, chirping voices that bonds closely with its family and often enjoys games of fetch. It is confident and engaging.

Care

The coat, short or long, is easy to keep with occasional grooming. An energetic, social cat, it wants play and company to stay content.

Health

The breed is generally healthy, and importantly its bobtail comes from a different gene than the Manx's, without the spinal problems that trait can carry. As with any cat, the measured facts and trait ratings are in the panels.
