Hokkaido Inu

The Hokkaido is one of Japan's six native spitz breeds — a hardy northern dog kept by the Ainu people, and a designated Japanese natural monument.

History

It came north with the Ainu and hunted bear and deer in the deep snow of Hokkaido, work that selected for endurance, courage and an unusually thick coat. Many carry a spotted tongue, which is one of the breed's distinctive markers.

Temperament

The breed is known for being brave, faithful and alert, with a strong bond to its own family and considerable independence. It is watchful with strangers and has the endurance of a dog bred for hard country.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and secure containment. Socialising should be early and continued; training works better as partnership than as drill. The dense double coat sheds heavily and handles cold far better than heat.

Health

Generally hardy, with hip dysplasia and, in some lines, an inherited neurological condition breeders test for. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
