Cirneco dell'Etna

The Cirneco dell'Etna is a small, elegant sighthound from Sicily — a hardy, ancient hunter shaped by the volcanic slopes around Mount Etna.

History

It has hunted rabbit across the harsh lava terrain of Sicily for well over a thousand years, working by sight, scent and hearing on little food and less water. Its tough feet and lean frame are the marks of that unforgiving country.

Temperament

The breed is known for being affectionate, lively and gentle — a friendly companion at home and an independent, keen hunter outdoors. It is more biddable and easygoing than many of its sighthound relatives.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and a securely fenced space, since its prey drive is strong, and it responds to gentle, patient training. The short coat is easy to keep.
