Chukotka Sled Dog

The Chukotka Sled Dog is the aboriginal sled dog of the Chukchi people of far north-eastern Siberia — the population the Siberian Husky was drawn from.

History

Chukchi coastal communities have driven these dogs for a thousand years or more, in long teams over sea ice, hauling moderate loads at a steady pace rather than sprinting. Dogs exported to Alaska in the early twentieth century became the Siberian Husky; the Russian population continued as a working landrace and was standardised only recently, having nearly been lost when Soviet policy replaced dog teams with machines.

Temperament

The breed is known for being sociable with people and with other dogs, hardy, cooperative in a team, and possessed of the independence a dog needs when the driver cannot see the ice ahead.

Care and training

It needs a very great deal of exercise and does poorly without work. Containment must be serious: it roams. The thick double coat sheds massively and suits cold far better than heat.

Health

A working landrace with a wide gene pool, generally robust; nothing is widely documented as breed-specific. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
