Canaan Dog

The Canaan Dog is a pariah-type breed from the Middle East, developed from free-living desert dogs and now the national dog of Israel.

History

It descends from the semi-wild dogs of the Levant, animals that lived alongside people for millennia without being bred by them. In the 1930s a small population was collected and developed deliberately, first for guard and messenger work and later as a recognised breed — one of very few built from a genuinely feral base.

Temperament

The breed is known for being alert, self-possessed and highly territorial, devoted to its household and openly suspicious of strangers. Desert survival selected for independence, and it shows in a dog that assesses before it obeys.

Care and training

It needs moderate exercise, early and continued socialising, and training that respects its judgement rather than overriding it. The double coat sheds seasonally and needs only regular brushing.

Health

Shaped mostly by natural selection, it is among the more robust breeds and carries no defect widely documented as specific to it. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
