Black and Tan Terrier

The Black and Tan Terrier is the old English working terrier that stands behind a great many modern breeds, and which no longer exists in its own right.

History

It was the ordinary rough working terrier of England, kept for rats, fox and badger long before kennel clubs recorded anything. Nineteenth-century breeders drew on it to make the Welsh Terrier, the Manchester Terrier, the Airedale and the Lakeland among others, and the parent type was absorbed into its descendants rather than preserved. What is described here is a historical breed, which is why the panel is nearly empty.

Temperament

Contemporary accounts describe it as hard, game and independent, bred to work underground alone and to keep going.

Care and training

Nothing here is husbandry advice for a living dog. If you are looking at this page because you like the type, its living descendants carry it — and each of them has its own page.

Health

Not documented: no population exists to describe. These are historical notes rather than a forecast for any dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
