Treeing Walker Coonhound

The Treeing Walker Coonhound is an American scent hound bred for speed and voice — a fast, tenacious tree dog descended from the Walker foxhound.

History

It was developed in the United States from Walker foxhound stock into a dedicated coonhound, prized for the pace with which it strikes and runs a trail and the persistence with which it holds game at bay in a tree. It is one of the most popular coonhounds in its homeland.

Temperament

The breed is known for being smart, confident and sociable — friendly and affectionate at home, and driven and loud-voiced on a trail. It is energetic and wants an outlet.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and a securely fenced space, since a scent hound in pursuit will not recall, and training rewards patience and food. The short coat is easy to keep.

Health
