Treeing Feist

The Treeing Feist is the general American feist type — a small, agile hunting dog that drives squirrel and other small game up a tree and marks it.

History

Feists have been kept by American hunters since the colonial period, and the type is described in accounts going back to the eighteenth century. Like the curs, feists are registered on working ability rather than pedigree, so the dogs vary in size, coat and colour.

Temperament

The breed is known for being lively, courageous and closely attached to its handler, quieter on the ground than a hound and vocal at the tree.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and hunting or an equivalent outlet. It is intelligent and trains well for work it understands. Coat care is minimal.
