Spanish Mastiff

The Spanish Mastiff is a livestock guardian from the Iberian plateau and the heaviest breed in this catalogue — a slow, deliberate dog built to stand between a flock and a wolf.

History

It has worked in Spain for centuries alongside the transhumant flocks that moved between summer and winter pasture, walking the drove roads with the sheep and sleeping among them. Its job was never to herd: it was to be large enough that a wolf reconsidered.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, self-possessed and slow to react, with a guarding instinct that switches on decisively and rarely otherwise. It is affectionate with its own household and indifferent to almost everything else.

Care and training

Exercise needs are moderate rather than extreme — this is an endurance animal, not an athletic one — but it needs space and secure boundaries. Socialising must start early and continue, and a dog this size has to be reliable on a lead before it is fully grown. It drools, and the dense coat sheds heavily.

Health

Known tendencies include hip and elbow dysplasia, entropion, and bloat; giant breeds also live shorter lives on average. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
