Manx

The Manx is a tailless cat from the Isle of Man — round in every line, with a natural mutation that shortens or removes the tail entirely.

History

It arose as a natural mutation among the cats of the Isle of Man, where an island population fixed the taillessness that gives the breed its name. Cats range from completely tailless "rumpies" to those with a short stub.

Temperament

The breed is known for being friendly, playful and dog-like — sociable, loyal and often fond of games such as fetch. It bonds closely with its household.

Care

The dense coat, short or long, needs regular brushing, and the tailless rump deserves gentle handling. It is an easygoing, companionable cat.

Health

The gene behind the taillessness can cause serious spinal and nerve defects, known as Manx syndrome, particularly when two tailless cats are bred together; arthritis at the tail base is also seen. This is inherent to the breed and its central welfare concern, a matter for careful, informed breeding and choice.
