Lithuanian Hound

The Lithuanian Hound is a black-and-tan scent hound and Lithuania's only native breed — a heavy-boned tracker that came close to disappearing entirely.

History

It was developed from Polish, Russian and Baltic hound stock for hunting hare, fox and boar in Lithuanian forest, and was favoured by the nobility. By the 1980s only a few dozen dogs remained; a state-supported programme rebuilt the population from them.

Temperament

The breed is known for being steady, tenacious and closely attached to its handler, calm in the house and single-minded in the field.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and secure ground. The short coat is easy; the drop ears want routine care. Recall demands realistic expectations.

Health

A very small founding population is the standing caution; nothing else is widely documented as specific to the breed. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
