Hälleforshund

The Hälleforshund is a Swedish hunting spitz from the Hällefors district in Västmanland, bred to bay elk.

History

It was developed in the twentieth century by hunters in and around Hällefors, from local spitz stock, for the same work the Jämthund does: find a moose, hold it and bark until the hunter reaches it. Swedish recognition came in 2000, which makes it one of the younger Nordic hunting breeds.

Temperament

The breed is known for being steady, courageous and cooperative with its hunter, friendly at home and independent at work.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and genuine work; it is a poor fit for a household with neither. The thick double coat sheds heavily twice a year.
