Eurasier

The Eurasier is a German spitz breed created in the 1960s specifically as a family companion — one of the few breeds designed for temperament rather than for a job.

History

It was developed by crossing the Wolfspitz with the Chow Chow and later the Samoyed, with the explicit aim of combining spitz looks with a calm, people-bonded character. Breed clubs still place unusual emphasis on temperament and on raising puppies inside the home.

Temperament

The breed is known for being calm, even-tempered and quietly devoted to its own family, reserved with strangers without being nervous or aggressive. It is notably undemonstrative — it barks little and asks for closeness rather than activity.

Care and training

It needs moderate daily exercise and, above all, to be with its people; this is a breed that does badly kennelled or left alone. The thick double coat sheds heavily twice a year and needs regular brushing. Training should be gentle — it is sensitive to harshness.

Health

A relatively young breed with a carefully managed gene pool; known tendencies include hip dysplasia and, in some lines, hypothyroidism. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
