Braque Saint-Germain

The Braque Saint-Germain is a French pointing dog in white and orange — a cross between a French braque and an English Pointer that became a breed in its own right.

History

It began around 1830 at the royal kennels at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, where a French braque was mated with an English Pointer belonging to the king. The puppies were admired, bred on, and eventually standardised, which makes the breed's origin unusually well recorded.

Temperament

The breed is known for being gentle, sociable and easy-going, a pointing dog with a softer disposition than most and a real attachment to its household.

Care and training

It needs substantial exercise and work for its nose, and responds to encouragement rather than pressure. The short coat is easy to keep.

Health

Generally robust with no defect widely documented as specific to the breed. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
