Bichon Frisé

The Bichon Frise is a small companion breed with a soft, curly white coat — a cheerful lapdog of Mediterranean origin.

History

It descends from the little white bichon-type dogs of the Mediterranean, kept as companions and traded by sailors, and later a favourite in French and Spanish courts before finding a second life as a circus and companion dog. It was bred for company from the beginning.

Temperament

The breed is known for being cheerful, affectionate and playful — a sociable dog that gets on with children, strangers and other pets and thrives on attention. It dislikes being left alone for long.

Care and training

Exercise needs are modest, met with walks and play, but the curly coat is a real commitment — it sheds little yet mats easily, so it needs frequent brushing and regular clipping. It is bright and trains well with gentle, reward-based work.

Health
