Belgian Shepherd

The Belgian Shepherd is one breed in four coats — Groenendael, Tervuren, Malinois and Laekenois — recognised as a single breed in Belgium and split into separate ones by some registries.

History

It was standardised in Belgium at the end of the nineteenth century from local herding dogs, with the four varieties named after the places their coat types were concentrated. The Malinois in particular went on to become one of the most widely used police and military dogs in the world.

Temperament

The breed is known for being intensely alert, quick to learn and closely bonded to its handler, with a working drive that does not switch off. It is sensitive as well as driven, and responds badly to heavy-handed training.

Care and training

It needs serious daily exercise and real mental work — this is a dog that fails in a quiet household. Training should start early and stay consistent. Coat care varies by variety, from the long Groenendael to the short Malinois.

Health

Known tendencies include hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy in some lines, and inherited eye conditions. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
