Beagle-Harrier

The Beagle-Harrier is exactly what its name says — a French hound made by crossing the Beagle with the Harrier, and standing between the two in size.

History

It was created in France in the nineteenth century by a baron who wanted a hound with the Beagle's nose and the Harrier's legs, for hunting hare and roe deer. It has never been numerous and is rare even in France, where it remains a working hound rather than a show dog.

Temperament

The breed is known for being lively, friendly and tolerant, at ease in a pack and with people, and single-minded once it is on a line.

Care and training

It needs a great deal of exercise and secure fencing. Training is straightforward except for recall, which is the perpetual argument with a hound's nose. The short coat needs little.

Health

Generally robust; ear infections from the drop ears are the common complaint. These are patterns for the breed rather than a forecast for one dog; the measured facts are in the panel.
