Austrian Black and Tan Hound

The Austrian Black and Tan Hound — the Brandlbracke — is a medium scent hound bred in the Austrian mountains to track wounded game by its blood trail.

History

It is an old Austrian hound, developed for the exacting work of following a wounded deer or boar over steep, forested country long after the trail has gone cold. The sleek black-and-tan coat gives the breed its name.

Temperament

The breed is known for being even-tempered, determined and loyal, quiet and steady at home and utterly focused once it is working a scent. It bonds closely with its handler.

Care and training

It needs regular exercise and mental work, ideally scent work, and a securely fenced space. The short coat is easy to keep, and the ears need routine checking.
