Asian

The Asian is a British group of varieties rather than a single coat — Burmese in build and character, in colours and patterns the Burmese standard excludes.

History

It grew out of the same accidental Burmese-and-Chinchilla mating that produced the Burmilla, as breeders developed the other coats that pairing made possible: selfs, smokes, tabbies and torties. British registries group these as the Asian, with the shaded silver split off as the Burmilla.

Temperament

The breed is known for being sociable, talkative and closely bonded to its household — Burmese in character, which means active, curious and disinclined to be left out of anything.

Care

The short coat is straightforward. Company is the real requirement, and a single Asian in an empty house is the wrong arrangement; it generally takes well to other cats.

Health

It carries the Burmese pattern of known tendencies, and its Persian ancestry brings polycystic kidney disease into screening. These are known patterns for the breed and a matter for a breeder and a vet; the measured facts and trait ratings are in the panels.
